During the week under review, militant attacks decreased in number but not in intensity, with five attacks resulting in 29 fatalities, including 18 security personnel, eight militants, two pro-government razakars, and one civilian. The most significant attack occurred in South Waziristan’s Makeen area, where the TTP targeted an FC camp, killing 16 security personnel and wounding 12. The attack prompted Pakistan to conduct airstrikes on TTP camps in Afghanistan’s Paktika province. Meanwhile, security forces launched operations in various parts of erstwhile FATA, eliminating 28 militants.
The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Apex Committee held a special meeting to address security challenges in Kurram district, which has seen over 130 fatalities from sectarian and tribal conflicts. The committee outlined a strategy to restore peace, including the removal of bunkers, surrender of illegal weapons, and strengthened federal-provincial collaboration. Measures such as road restoration, air transport for essential supplies, and the creation of a special force for highway security were approved. Despite these efforts, violence persisted, with the brutal killings of two residents triggering further protests.
Talks between the government and PTI began, with both sides forming committees to resolve political tensions. However, entrenched positions and unresolved issues, such as the May 9 violence, hinder progress. While military courts sentenced 85 PTI activists, to rigorous imprisonment for their involvement in the riots, international bodies expressed concerns about the fairness of these trials. The Supreme Court’s pending decision on military court jurisdiction could significantly impact PTI’s leadership, including its founder, who continues to face legal challenges under anti-terrorism laws.
Afghanistan-Pakistan relations experienced both diplomatic engagement and military confrontation. A Pakistani delegation, led by Ambassador Mohammad Sadiq, visited Kabul to address security and economic cooperation, emphasizing joint efforts to tackle shared concerns. Diplomatic efforts were complemented by the Taliban’s relocation of TTP members to Ghazni province to ease tensions. However, these initiatives were overshadowed by Pakistan’s airstrikes in Afghanistan’s Paktika province, targeting TTP camps in retaliation for cross-border attacks. The strikes strained relations, with Kabul condemning them as violations of sovereignty, escalating diplomatic friction.
