June turned out to be the second consecutive in which number of reported militant attacks in Pakistan crossed the figure of 20. An upsurge in violence in Pakistan is coincided with US-NATO withdrawal from Afghanistan an escalation in violence in the neighboring country.
A slight decline in militant attacks was observed in the country during the month of June but the violence trend still remains high as 22 militant attacks were reported in Pakistan. After the highest number of militant attacks reported in May this year, 22 number of attacks in a single month was second highest since October 2018.
According to the statistics released by an Islamabad-based independent think tank Pakistan Institute for Conflict and Security Studies (PICSS), 22 militant attacks were recorded in June 2021 in which 42 people were killed including 22 security forces personnel and 20 civilians while 56 were injured including 44 civilians and 12 security forces personnel. In May 2021, (PICSS) had recorded 24 militant attacks in which 41 people were killed and 65 others were injured.
It is worth noticing that the highest number of causalities were recorded in a single month in May 2021, since October 2018 while June 2021 turned to be second deadliest month in which 42 people were killed in the month of June in 22 militant attacks.
According to the PICSS statistics, the highest number of militant attacks were reported from the Balochistan province where eight militant attacks were carried out in which 16 people were killed including 11 security forces personnel and 5 civilians and 10 others were injured. It appeared that the militants fighting on the ethnic basis in Balochistan have stepped up their attacks as most of the attacks in the province were reported from ethnic Baloch areas.
Tribal districts of KPK (Erstwhile FATA) witnessed seven militant attacks in which 16 people were killed including seven security forces personnel and nine civilians while 18 others were injured including eight security forces personnel and ten civilians. The rest of the KPK and Sindh witnessed two militant attacks each in which three people were killed in KPK and similar number of people were killed in Punjab. Similarly, attacks carried out in Punjab caused one injury. While, Azad Jammu Kashmir (AJK), Islamabad Capital Territory (ICT) and Punjab witnessed one militant attack each. Militant attack carried out in Punjab caused three deaths and 24 others were injured. Attack occurred in ICT resulted in two deaths. Militant attack in AJK caused one people killed and three injured.
It seems that militants have extended their attacks in all provinces of Pakistan.
As per the PICSS report, out of these 22 militant attacks, seven were incidents of physical assault which caused 16 deaths including 15 security forces personnel and one civilian while 14 other people were injured including ten security forces personnel and four civilians. Similarly, seven IED-based attacks were carried out in which 16 people were killed including 11 civilians and five security forces personnel and 36 others were injured including 35 civilians and one security forces personnel. Five targets-killing incidents were carried out in which seven people were killed including five civilians and two security forces personnel while two others were injured. Two grenade attack were also reported in which three civilians were injured. No suicide attack or kidnapping incident was reported during the month.
In June, 22 security forces actions were reported in which 11 militants were killed while 25 suspected militants were apprehended. Two security forces personnel were also killed in these operations. The highest number of security forces actions were reported from Punjab where 11 notable security forces actions were monitored in which 16 suspected militants were arrested including terror network behind a car bomb attack near the residence of Hafiz Muhammad Saeed.
Four security forces actions were monitored in Sindh where 5 suspected militants were arrested. Three security forces actions were reported from Balochistan in which seven people were killed including six militants and one security forces personnel. In these operations two suspected militants were also arrested. Erstwhile FATA and KPK witnessed two security forces actions each in which one security forces personnel and two militants were killed while one suspected militant was arrested from former FATA. While in KPK three militants were killed and one suspected militant was arrested.
